Business Continuity OverviewBusiness Continuity is becoming a more and more important for businesses. Freak weather events, industrial accidents and terrorism have highlighted the need for careful planning to ensure a company continues to trade after a major incident. The statistics are quite stark. Every year 1 in 5 businesses in the UK face a major disruption to their services and 1 in 10 of these will cease trading. For those business that have not made plans to cope with a disaster the failure rate is 50% within 1 year.. The most common threats to a business are fire, theft, flooding, vandalism and power failure but disruptions can also occur for less dramatic reasons. If a premises happens to be close to a major crime scene for instance it can be cordoned off and staff would not be able to enter the building until the investigation is complete. While it is impossible to predict every kind of incident that may threaten your organisation you can develop a plan that will flexible enough to keep the company trading should the worst happen.
Continuity of Information systemsOne area that is central to the operation of any company is of course IT. Business functions like admin, accounts, sales, marketing, design and production are all heavily dependent on working computer system. Every business continuity plan (sometimes known as a disaster recovery plan) needs to have a sectiont that covers how the IT systems will be re-instated after an incident. ITSP has a lot of experience developing business continuity plans for businesses. As well as helping to develop your plan we also assist when the plan is activated and provide a range of services including:
CostsThe of developing a plan will depend on the size of the company and the type of business you are running. For example a 5 person business with one office that is mostly computer based can have a very simple plan that costs from £50 per month. A large company will have a much higher impact plan and so that will cost more. It is important to look beyond the cost of having a business continuity plan and look instead at the value of having it should a serious incident take place.
